3 Practical Ways To Overcome The Temptation To Be Envious

Envy, also referred to as greed, jealousy or covetousness, is any feeling of discontentment or resentful longing that is aroused in us by someone else’s qualities, achievements, possessions, luck e.t.c. It is both the feeling of utter dissatisfaction we have with our lives after we’ve compared it to (our knowledge or perception of) another person’s life, as well as, any hateful feeling we have towards someone else because that person possess something we wish was ours.

The Bible’s teaching on this subject is VERY clear. God is not please when we are discontented with our lives because it doesn’t compare with that of others (1Tim 6:6, 2Cor 10:12). He completely disapproves of us being too concerned about material things (Luke 12:15, 1Tim 6:10) And, He also really hates it when we hate others for something they have which we would want for ourselves (Exodus 20:17). So in other words envy/covetousness/jealousy/greed is a sin #EndOfStory.

However, to simply say that envy is a sin is neither new nor helpful. What would be helpful is the knowledge and application of practical steps you and I can take to overcome the temptation to be envious. Here are the 3 things you can do to keep from giving in to the temptation to be envious of another:

1. Pray for that person: yeah you heard me. The moment an unclean thought passes through your mind about how much you resent someone else for having something you want, disappoint the devil by nipping that thought in the bud. Instead of letting such an envious thought linger, immediately begin praying to God to keep blessing and protecting that other person in all areas of their life. Since the devil doesn’t want you praying for anyone to be blessed, he’ll definitely stop telling you nonsense.

2. Remind yourself that God’s blessings for you follows a unique calendar: Tell yourself ‘When my time comes, my spiritual blessings will come into physical manifestation because in the end, God makes all things beautiful in HIS time’.

Its important that you make this confession out loud. Say it to yourself. Over and over again until your heart fully receives this message as the truth and until the desire to want what another has loses its power over you.

3. Celebrate the truth that each one of us (God’s children) has got enough room to shine: Every of God’s creation is unique and each of us has an equal opportunity to excel in whatever we do. Even when we are called by God to do similar things, God fully plans to use us all in unique ways that are equally as glorious.

Ephesians 3:10 (AMP) tells us…….

“10 [The purpose is] that through the church the [c]complicated, many-sided wisdom of God in all its infinite variety and innumerable aspects might now be made known to the angelic rulers and authorities (principalities and powers) in the heavenly sphere.

The church is not the building. The church here refers to the body of believers who believe and serve their Lord & savior-Jesus. It is therefore through each of us that God intends to showcase his manysided wisdom. Hallelujah. I am only one expression of the many-sided wisdom of God in all its infinite (inexhaustible) variety & innumerable (uncountable) aspects. There’s simply no need to envy you cos I’m unique to God and in Him. Praise the Lord!!!
