“4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres .8 Love never fails.”
1 Corinthians 13:4-8a (NIV)
Those who win never quit and those who quit never win. Call that a cliché all you want but it’s true, even of love. Those who quit on love cannot claim to have known what it is to love because love always perseveres.
To persevere means, to stay; to remain; to endure; to refuse to quit. Simply put, when a person perseveres in a given situation, that person has chosen to follow through on an earlier decision, no matter what. It’s like the marathon runner who decides that he will compete in a 10,000meter marathon. He registers for the race, prepares for it and turns up on the day of the event. At the sound of the whistle, he runs and runs and runs until his muscles start to ache. Then he starts to feel a little faint. Then he trips not once, not twice but four times. BUT YET he stays in the race, all the while saying
“I will complete this race because that’s what I signed up for.
I may not win the race any longer but I will make an effort to cross that finish line.”
Every believer must persevere in walking in love towards God and towards others, just as a marathon runner perseveres in running his race. For just as unexpected trials and difficulties arise which tempt the marathon runner to quit his race, so also will each of us be tempted during the inevitable storms of life to quit on God and/or on others.
The best of God is found only when we walk in love and the best of love is found only when we persevere through trials and difficulties. How do I know this to be true?
“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many
kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let
perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”
“Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test,
he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.”
Love grows and reaps a rich reward from God when it refuses to quit. But we are not called to endure for the sake of enduring or for any other selfish motives, we are called to endure the hard, difficult, not so pleasant situations in our relationships BECAUSE we love God and others. Love must be the motive behind our willingness to endure and nothing else.
Love always perseveres. You and I have got what it takes to keep our commitments to our loved ones through trying times. Let’s let God’s love shine through us. Shalom!!
Please join me in saying this confession:
“The love of God has been shed abroad in my heart by the Holy Ghost. I shall endeavor to let that love nature dominate me. I have God’s love nature in my heart – in my spirit. Therefore, I’ll not let my natural reasoning dominate me. I refuse to allow the flesh to rule me. I’m going to walk in the Spirit by walking in love.
I am a lover not a hater.
I will practice and exercise the fruit of love so that it can grow and increase. …….I will make the love of God my great quest in life, for then my love shall abound, and God shall reap the glory.
N.B. The above confession is an excerpt from Rev Kenneth Hagin’s book : ‘LOVE: The way to victory’.
